AGIOFARAGO BEACH

Agiofarago is a picturesque canyon located south of Matala. Its name reflects the purpose of travelers in past centuries who made their way through this remote landscape. According to legend, the caves were once inhabited by hermits who lived off the fruits and vegetables of the canyon. They are said to have gathered at the “Goumenospilio,” a cave that can still be visited and admired today. Each hermit had his own rock to sit on, and if someone was absent from the gathering, it was believed that he had passed away.

Visitors can cross the canyon and experience its rare natural beauty, as well as discover the old church of Agios Antonios (Saint Anthony), which once served as the spiritual center of the hermits. In the church courtyard there is a well that still provides drinkable water.

After about a 30-minute walk further down, the canyon opens up to Agiofarago Beach, where visitors can swim and relax in a truly secluded setting.
