KALAMAKI BEACH

Kalamaki is a popular seaside resort in the Heraklion Prefecture, located in southern Crete. It lies about 67 km south of Heraklion, very close to Kamilari, Matala, and Phaistos.

It is a typical tourist destination in southern Crete. While it is not particularly scenic in a traditional sense, it fully meets the needs of summer visitors with its long sandy beach, tavernas, hotels, and a wide range of rooms and apartments for rent.

Kalamaki has no long historical background, as the settlement did not exist before around 1970. Unlike nearby Kamilari, where traditional architecture and history are evident, Kalamaki is a modern development with no distinct architectural character.

The village is built along the wide beach of Messara Bay, the largest beach in southern Crete. The resort has expanded rapidly and now extends into the surrounding hills, in a landscape that can resemble a semi-arid or desert-like environment.

Thanks to its central location in southern Crete, Kalamaki offers easy and quick access to many major attractions and archaeological sites such as Matala, Kommos, Phaistos, Agia Galini, and more.

Within a short drive, visitors can also explore traditional villages of the Messara Plain or enjoy swimming at many nearby beaches along the southern coast of Crete.
